Commissioning a portrait is both a creative and collaborative process. The short film below offers an introduction to the way I work, followed by answers to some frequently asked questions about commissioning a painting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the commission process work?

The process usually begins with an initial conversation about the portrait, including size, setting, reference material, and any ideas you may have. From there, we agree the composition and approach before the painting begins.

Do you work from photographs or from life?

Most portraits are painted from photographic reference, often combined with sketches or in-person sittings where possible. Good reference material is essential and I’m happy to advise on this.

Can you help with photography for the portrait?

Yes. If needed, I can advise on suitable photographs or arrange a reference photo session to ensure the best possible starting point for the painting.

How long does a portrait commission take?

Timescales vary depending on the size and complexity of the painting, as well as current workload, but most commissions take between three to six months from commencement to completion.

How much does a portrait commission cost?

Pricing depends on the size of the painting, the number of sitters, and the complexity of the composition. A guide price can usually be provided following an initial conversation.

Is framing included?

Framing can be arranged if required and discussed as part of the commission process.

Can you paint children and family groups?

Yes. Individual portraits, family groups, and portraits of children are all welcome.

Will I be able to see the painting before it is finished?

Yes. Clients are usually invited to see the work during the painting process to ensure the portrait is developing in the right direction.

Do you require a deposit?

A deposit is required to secure a commission booking, with the balance payable upon completion.

Can portraits be commissioned as gifts?

Absolutely. Portrait commissions often mark important occasions and can make deeply personal and lasting gifts.

Do you undertake commissions outside the UK?

Yes. Portraits can be commissioned internationally and shipped.
